2017 Kites and Flights

A report from Bill about our 2017 Kites and Flights event:

2017 turned out to be one of the best
NCBC Kites and Flights events in many
years. The weather turned out to be the
best, 8 balloons with their crews came
out to fly. Friday night several balloons
were ready to fly but the wind never
dropped. Saturday AM the winds were
light on the surface with 7 to 10 knots
above 500 feet, with about 90+ degrees
of steerage.. the fall leaves were spectacular...

There were about 35/40 balloonists out
in the AM.... we invaded the local
breakfast spot and we finished by noon
and everyone was ready to refuel to get
ready the evening flight.? Mid afternoon
more balloonists started to arrive by
the evening flight we were up to 65/70
friends.

Eight balloons lifted off for the
evening flight.. it was tight in the
launch field and everyone worked
together, last Balloon away was
Sandra....she handled the launch
like a pro, her landing was a stand
up....

During the Day Sandra got around to
mingle with all the balloonists.
It was great to hear her speak
with everyone. Supper time came
and a ton of food appeared.?
Every one left with full tummies...

Everyone left ready for our next
Kites and Flights 2018 - Oct 20th.

Book your calendars now!

Sandra’s Story so Far…

For those of you wondering about our friend Sandra, here’s a video of her story so far…

And a message from Bill:

The last few weeks have been extremely busy.

I am sure most of you saw the article about Sandra
and her progress.

The article was generated by the Ottawa Citizen,
because of the Bruyere Foundation fund raising
Breakfast. We had 2 tables of friends and family, and 3
tables of her work colleages.

There were two presentations one for the Bruyere
palliative care, and the other from the stroke rehab
program. Guess who Bruyere picked for the never
give up attitude? Yes our one and only Sandra.

If you would like to make a contribution to Bruyere
Foundation, it would be greatly appreciated.

Post Kites and Flights 2016 Report

Here is a Post Kites and Flights report from our friend Bill:

Rain, Rain, Rain... to put it bluntly.

The rain started on Thursday and it never stopped till
Sunday morning.
In true balloonist spirit, they started to show up
before sunrise.
We all new the weather would keep us grounded, and
the rain would also keep the kites dry inside. We
had plenty of pilots and crew out for breakfast.
When we returned from breakfast, more crew were
waiting.
Even though the weather was terrible all day,
more pilots and crew would come and go stopping
in to say Hi.

We were graced by new friends from the local
half-way house, (several types of handicaps).
They came hoping to see kites or balloons.
Our good friend Gerard had set up several kites
in the shop to add some color. Some of these kites
were made from our left over balloon fabric cuttings.

Supper time came around and the head count was more
than 40.
That's one thing about balloonists, we may miss a
flight or two but we never miss a meal!

Our next Kites and Flight takes place next
Oct 21, 2017, mark your calendars now.
No excuses, we plan on having good weather.

Post Kites and Flights message

Here’s a write up from Bill:

This past weekend proved to be a good one. It all started
Friday when Balloon friends started to show up early.

Weather watchers tend to do that. The High pressure system
that came in did not want to be wasted. 6 balloons took to
the sky Friday night and some of us got to fly almost 2 hours.

On Saturday morning, before 7:00 AM, there were almost 50
people here as 8 Balloons took to the sky. The forecast
(SpotWX) was to have stronger winds by early morning,
and they got it right. After an hour we were flying at
20+ MPH, or 40 Km range, at low level. Some found long
fields and we managed to hide behind some tall trees.

Breakfast was a lot of good friends at Maggie's in
Alexandria... The afternoon had more balloons arrive but
only the Kites took flight, as a weather rain system approached.
A few brought their kites so the sky had lots of color
all afternoon.

Lots of good old friends with new ones acquired, the weekend
was a great time.

So Members of the NCBC - Mark your calendar's now! Next years
Date is  Saturday Oct 22, 2016. If you want to plan on coming
early just let us know.

Thanks to our fellow Balloonists from New Brunswick, New
Hampshire, New York, Ottawa/Gatineau, Montreal, St Jean,
and Quebec city for attending.

Gentle Breezes and soft Landing, But a few Fast ones,
yee haw.....EH!!!
