Bunch of Bees: Completion and Inflation

The Bunch of Bees Special Shape Balloon has now been completed.

Here is the last update (before the inflation) from Bill:

“Good Morning everyone.  After 1500 hours of work, we finally completed the Bunch of Bees Balloon. We sewed the last seam on Sunday afternoon.  With that Long arm sewing machine, it went together very well. We then put in the last Inner panels and the structure panels.

We also started cutting the pattern sheets for Sandra’s Queen Bee, we should be cutting fabric this week….

The first inflation will happen when the fields are dry, which at this rate may be in JUNE as we still have SNOW. The first flight will happen when we get the paper work from Transport Canada.

Thanks to everyone who pitched in. Your help and company was much appreciated.

See ya all sooner than Later

Wild Bill EH!

(According to Dale since I had another Birthday, I am now MILD Bill  EH!)”

So that was written a couple of weeks ago, and since then the Bunch of Bees Balloon has since been inflated twice. The first time revealed a couple of missed seams that needed to be completed, and the second inflation was Sunday night, where Bill put some heat in it and stood it up for the first time!

Here it is in all its glory:

Sandra’s Queen Bee Special Shape Balloon has already been started. Most of the balloon fabric has now been, as Lynne and I helped Sandra and Bill cut some of the remaining gore panels, and ended up cutting all the pieces for the crown out of silver fabric on Saturday:

Thank You from Leslie Manion & David Lopushinsky (Past Presidents)

Thank you so much for a lovely farewell dinner last night at that NCBC favourite, Louis’ Steakhouse. We were honoured to see so many familiar faces come out to wish us well. As well, we appreciated becoming Honourary Members (think we only have done that once before ), loved the apple tags in the zebra bag, and enjoyed our dinner immensely.

The NCBC has been an integral aspect of our 25 years in Ottawa, and our lives have come to revolve around the ballooning community. The friendships made, the lessons learned from the stories told, and the experiences shared will extend well beyond the distance that will separate us. The NCBC, and the people in it, will be in our heart for years to come.

May our paths cross again. Meanwhile, gentle breezes and soft landings to all.

Leslie & Dave

Leslie and Dave are leaving Ottawa and moving to British Columbia. Leslie & Dave were presented Honorary NCBC memberships for their years of dedication to the NCBC. We wish them well!

Bunch of Bees: Almost Done!

Here’s an update from Bill on the Bunch of Bees Special Shape Balloon:

“Hey every one. A quick update on BoB.

Only one long seam to build. We will make the last long seam on the shop floor, so we do not have to move the Balloon on the table. It’s pretty big now…

Almost everything else is done thanks to Dale and Jean. Dale has been here at the shop since Tuesday, what a great big help he was! We had the Balloon outside all day Wednesday. We started by untwisting some of the inner panels, then we brought the sewing machines outside and worked outside in the fresh air, sewing all day. The top cap will be completed later today. The Velcro closures are ready for installation.

Once we sew the “Long seam” to close up the balloon (from a flat sheet to a balloon), we will have to sew in the inner panel sections, sew the inner structure panels, and put the last load tape in place.

Then we will turn the balloon outside-out, as it’s currently inside-out, with the bees on the inside to facilitate sewing the inner structure panels.

We are waiting on the material for the flying wires to be delivered from Atlantic Braid, and once we finish manufacturing the flying wires we will be ready to inflate it for the first time!

Thanks to everyone who helped, I am smiling inside and out….

Sunday we will start cutting the paper sections for the Queen BEE-Loon!

Thanks again

Wild BILL EH!!!”

Bunch of Bees: Golden Angel

I am posting this on behalf of “Wild Bill”.

Saturday, 2013-03-30 a golden angel (Sandra) appeared in the workshop.

Dave, Marion, Martin and Sandra were all building the top cap, while Wild Bill, Dale and I were busy installing the inner panels on the bunch of bee’s.

Departing from the original design, Bill has decided to add little bees on the white panels on the top cap.  What’s a beehive without lots of bees? (A fact that Bill knows only too well as he has just discovered that all of his real bees died over the winter.)

As Bill says, “We are very close to closing the 1st balloon”!
